Our Wessex family of schools

First Aid and Medication

When a child becomes unwell or has an accident during the school day, they will be assessed in the Medical Room by our Lead First Aider, Miss Sales, or by another member of our first-aid-trained staff. Minor illnesses and injuries are managed on-site. In the event of a more serious incident, parents/carers will be contacted immediately. On rare occasions, we may need to call 999 for urgent medical assistance.

We kindly request that parents/carers inform the school of any existing illnesses or injuries so we can ensure this information is accurately recorded on the child’s file. If medication is required during school hours, it must be brought to the office by a parent/carer, along with a completed consent form. For Health & Safety reasons, all medication must be clearly labelled, in its original packaging, and will be stored securely in the Medical Room. Students must not keep medication with them during the school day.

At the end of each academic year, all medications must be collected by a parent/carer. If medication is still required for the following academic year, it should be brought back to school on the first day in September, and a new consent form must be completed.

Inhalers are stored in the Medical Room, where they remain accessible to children throughout the school day. The school also holds emergency salbutamol inhalers, which may be used if a child’s personal inhaler is unavailable or unusable. Parental consent is required for the use of an emergency inhaler.

EpiPens are stored in the school office and are readily accessible to staff and students in the event of an anaphylactic reaction. The school also holds emergency EpiPens, which may be administered if a child’s own device is unavailable or unusable. Parental consent is required for the use of an emergency EpiPen.

Emergency salbutamol inhaler and EpiPen consent forms are emailed to parents/carers at the start of each academic year. Paper copies are also available from the school office.
